THE IMAMATE OF IMAM ZAYN AL-ABIDIN (A)

No Imam began his Imamat in a more tragic atmosphere. The first day of his Imamat saw him seriously ill and a captive of the army of Yazid in Karbala. His father and predecessor had sacrificed all he had on the altar of truth; and Imam Zayn al-’Abidin found himself with a group of helpless widows and orphans being led from place to place, from the durbar of Ibn Ziyad to the court of Yazid. Finally they were thrown into a prison, where the Imam spent the first year of his Imamat, cut off from the followers of his father and unable to look after their affairs.

THE SCIENTIFIC SCHOOL OF IMAM JA’FAR AL-SADIQ (A)

The way of learning from al- Sadiq and discussing for evidence was not as the way we find today in the Islamic theological centers. Rather, his students, except some of them, believed in his Imamate. As we have mentioned earlier, the Imamis believe that the knowledge of the Imam did not depend on the idea and ijtihad (capability for issuing a verdict according to Islamic Law). So, the Imam was asked about the reference. Rather, his knowledge was inherited and divine. Yes, he was sometimes asked about the reason for the rule. Such questions were asked for learning and advantage, not for discussion.

THE LIFE & SCHOLARLY JIHAD OF IMAM AL-SADIQ (A)

Imam Ja‘far as-Sadiq, the sixth holy Imam, was born in 83 AH. Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq was brought up by his grandfather, Imam Zaynul-Abideen in Medina for twelve years and then remained under the sacred patronage of his father Imam Muhammad al-Baqir for a period of nineteen years. The Imamate of Ja’far as-Sadiq saw the most crucial period of Islamic history, both in political and in doctrinal spheres. It coincided with many epoch-making events, violent movements, the natural results of various undercurrent activities and revolutionary attempts. The very existence of this many-sided and complex situation facilitated the rise of Ja’far’s Imamate to a prominence not previously attained by the Imamates of his father and grandfather. On 25th Shawwal 148 AH, the governor of Medina by the order of al-Mansur, poisoned the Imam. The funeral prayer was conducted by his son Imam Musa al-Kadhim, the Seventh Imam, and his body was laid to rest in the cemetery of Jannatul-Baqee.

Name: Ja‘far.
