  • In the name of God, the Beneficent the Merciful
To the Youth in Europe and North America,

The recent events in France and similar ones in some other Western countries have convinced me to directly talk to you about them. I am addressing you, [the youth], not because I overlook your parents, rather it is because the future of your nations and countries will be in your hands; and also I find that the sense of quest for truth is more vigorous and attentive in your hearts.

I don’t address your politicians and statesmen either in this writing because I believe that they have consciously separated the route of politics from the path of righteousness and truth.

A saying (hadith) is synonymous with speech (kalam) in meaning. It is called a ‘hadith’, saying, in consideration of its renewal and step-by-step occurrence.

As for ‘quds’(lit. holy, divine),it means the pure. When a saying is qualified by the ‘holy’ or the ‘divine’, it denotes the divine words sent down not out of inimitability or challenge. Based on this, the Holy Qur’an is not called, according to the conventional application, a holy saying, even though it is a divine speech.

As regards the manner of the transmission of the holy saying to us, it is through the prophets and their executors.

On the meaning of the holy saying, Ayatollah Shaykh Ja‘far Subhani thus explains: The holy saying is a divine speech revealed not out of inimitability and is related by one of the prophets or the executors, such as His words: ‘Fasting belong to Me, and I will recompense it’. One ofthe differences between it and the Qur’an is that the latter has been revealed for the sake of challenge and inimitability, counter to the holy saying. For the Messenger of God (upon whom) used to deliver spiritual counsels to his Companions, which he related from his Lord (exalted and majestic be He). These were neither a revelation sent down so it may be called a Qur’an, nor were they an explicit tradition traced back to himself directly so it may be called a hadith. Rather, these were sayings which the Prophet carefully purposed to introduce with words indicative of their ascription to God’s words:, so that he would clearly state that his task was to relate them from God with a style that was distinctly different from that of the Qur’an. Nonetheless, it includes a breeze from the realm of holiness, a light from the world of the unseen, and an awe from the Possessor of Majesty and Munificence. These are the holy sayings which are also called the divine or lordly sayings.[۱]

Al-Usul al-Arba‘umi’ah are four hundred hadith books recorded by four hundred great scholars from among the companions of the two Imams: Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq and Musa ibn Ja‘far al-Kazim, upon both of whom be peace.[۱] These traditionists have collected a great number of traditions and narrations from the two Imams in their source collections.

Moreover, even though those source collections were not free from the vicissitudes of time entirely, its texts and its roots were held in safekeeping and reached us thanks to the sacrifice and efforts of the sincere scholars (may God sanctify their pure souls). For the traditions of these source collections were transmitted to the primary hadith reference sources, such as Jami‘ al-Bazanti, Jami‘ Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Yahya ibn ‘Imran al-Ash‘ari, i.e. Nawadir al-Hikmat, and the like, or to the secondary hadith reference sources, such as the four collections, or to other hadith collections.[۲]

Shaykh al-Kulayni (may God sanctify his pure soul) took pains to collect these valuable reference sources and obtain them. For that purpose he assumed the burden of travelling to several Muslim cities and countries, and the outcome of his efforts was his eminent book al-Kafi. It is apparent that a large number of these source collections were extant until recent periods among the men of knowledge, such as Shaykh al-Hurr al-‘Amili[۳], ‘Allamah al-Majlisi[۴], Muhaddith al-Nuri[۵].

The Prophet, upon whom and whose household be blessing, on various occasions, has addressed ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib, upon whom be peace, saying: Your rank in relation to me is that of Aaron in relation to Moses, except that there is no Prophet after me. The Prophet, upon whom and whose household be blessing, has enunciated the foregoing Hadith on the following occasions:

۱-On the Day of Fraternization. [۱]

۲-On the Day of Badr Battle.

۳- On the Day of the Conquest of Khaybar.

۴- On the Day of the Expedition of Tabuk. [۲]

۵- On the Day of the Contest of Prayer (al-Mubahalah).

۶-During the Farewell Pilgrimage.

۷-On the Day of Ghadir Khumm.

The Wide and Successive Transmission of the Hadith of the Rank

Here we shall refer to a number of the scholars who maintain the wide and successive transmission of the Hadith of the Rank.

Much indistinct speech proceeded in respect to the Codex of Fatimah (upon whom be peace) known as ‘Mushaf Fatimah’. The enemies of the Ahl al-Bayt (upon whom be peace) sought to speak ill of the Shi‘a by accusing them that they have another Qur’an from which they derive the precepts of religion, which they call the ‘Codex of Fatimah’. This is what the enemies of the school of the Ahl al-Bayt (upon whom be peace) claim – which is a false accusation and is not worthy of any consideration. For the scholar will soon find the invalidity of these words when he refers to external reality of refers to the prooftexts reported from the Imams of the Ahl al-Bayt (upon whom be peace).

Moreover, the foregoing accusation is not new, or rather, it goes back to the area of the Umayyads and the Abbasids who were contemporary with the infallible Imams (upon whom be peace). What corroborates it are the reporters’ questions and the Imams’ replies as well as their declaration that deny categorically the Codex of Fatimah being another Qur’an.
